“Let’s see, what else can I tell you about?” said my memory companion. This statement might seem insignificant out of context but to me it was the beginning of a relationship that was not easily won. Initially, when I was scheduled to provide caregiver respite for a care receiver who clearly did not want me there, I was worried. Who was I to just jump into this person’s life and insist that I “help” by becoming their companion. They rightfully were suspicious and guarded and I wanted to be respectful yet persistent. It hasn’t been a smooth path, but I am grateful for a chance to get to know my memory companion and get a glimpse into this person’s life. This is just one of the rich experiences I have had the honor of having by being connected to Normandale Center for Healing and Wholeness.
My first exposure to the Center was a decade earlier as a volunteer. I enjoy intergenerational relationships and the wisdom that comes from souls with experience and perspective far greater than mine. I had watched my parents navigate their caregiver duties with my grandparents and because I was getting a master’s degree in Holistic Health Studies at the time, I was intrigued when I came across Normandale Center for Healing and Wholeness on an internet search. An organization that served seniors in transition and their caregivers that focused on the needs of the whole person was a unique approach that I wanted to be part of. I started volunteering as a facilitator for “Living Well with Chronic Conditions” and “Matter of Balance” classes. However, after the birth of my first child, my available time shrank and I drifted away from this wonderful organization until late 2024.
In my decade away from the Center I had a caregiver journey of my own - a very different one than the clients at this organization have - yet, it shaped me and the path I was on in a profound way. It led me to pursue a second master’s degree in clinical social work at Boston University with an interest in caregiving, chronic illness, and grief. Since my school is located across the country from where I currently live in St. Paul, I needed to help my field coordinator find a location for my first internship experience. One of my initial thoughts was the Center. I am lucky to have had this opportunity work out and I have in just a short few months had some very formative experiences in my social work journey.
In addition to my dear relationship with my memory companion, I have also had the privilege of learning directly from caregivers about what they need by having the honor of attending the support groups, caregiver consultations, and Memory Café. I have been able to advocate (through the Alzheimer’s Association) at the state capitol for legislation to improve Alzheimer’s and Dementia care, and have met so many individuals whose stories, struggles, and triumphs will stay with me as I advance in my career and in life. At this point, I am only halfway through my internship and look forward to all the next adventures that will come across my path here.
Ten years go quickly, and a lot can happen in that time that can redirect your life’s path. I am so pleased that sometimes you end up back where you started in an unseen new position. 25 years can also feel like it can charge ahead at lightning speed. Looking at how the Center has managed to become a solid pillar for its community, increased its offerings, and grown in both staff and service is inspiring and gives me hope for society’s understanding and support for caregivers’ experiences. Happy 25th Anniversary, Normandale Center for Healing and Wholeness!
